Unfortunately, many common skin care products contain hazardous ingredients. Manufacturers utilize these chemicals in many popular products because they are inexpensive and easy to dilute. While this may be good for the company's bottom line, it is a danger to your skin!
Check out this list of common ingredients and why you should not use products that contain them.
|Propylene glycol||Used as a moisturizer, this chemical can cause skin irritation and dermatitis.|
|Sodium laurel/laurel sulfate||These chemicals easily penetrate your skin and are potentially carcinogenic. They are found in over 90% of personal care products.|
|Petrolatum and Paraffin||Petroleum based ingredients that clog pores and can disrupt hormonal activity. You wouldn't put motor oil on your skin would you?|
|Dioxane||This carcinogenic chemical is often hidden in other ingredients such as polysorbates, laureth and ethoxylated alcohol. Absolutely avoid putting these on your face.|
|Parabens||This preservative is very common in beauty products. Studies show that it can mimic estrogen, causing hormonal issues.|
Take a look in your bathroom and see if the products you own contain these ingredients. If they do, we recommend tossing them. The good news is that there are natural, organic skin care products you can use to keep your skin looking great! Be sure to always double check labels for harmful ingredients before buying, even if the product claims to be natural.
SCNM's Dr. Jaclyn Bain told us about the importance of researching your products. "Some companies now are labeling products as paraben free, but few are noting whether their products contain phthalates. Identifying phthalates on a label is also tricky as ingredients can be listed as phthalate, DEP, DEHP, DBP, or even just "fragrance." I recommend patients use the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database to choose healthier cosmetics."
If you want to be sure that your skin care items are pure, the SCNM Medicinary carries products both in our store and online that don't contain harmful chemicals.
