Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is most commonly caused by a condition called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a build up of a fatty substance called plaque on the inside of the artery walls. This condition makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood out to the body and can lead to heart attack, chest pain, or stroke. Other types of heart disease include heart failure, arrhythmia, and heart valve problems.
