Hypertension

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is caused by a narrowing of the arteries that carry blood around the body.  The heart works as a pump to push the blood through the now smaller diameter of vessels, which increases the pressure inside the artery walls. The heart must work harder when it is trying to pump blood out to the body and this leads can lead to heart disease.  High blood pressure is a common condition that is treatable.  Symptoms may be very mild, so people can have high blood pressure for many years and not know it.  High blood pressure stresses the cardiovascular system and can eventually lead to serious heart disease and even stroke if untreated.
