Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is not functioning properly by not producing enough thyroid hormones.  This in turn slows down vital functions of the body. People are diagnosed as hypothyroid when there is too little thyroid hormone detected in the blood, which can be determined by testing.  Hypothyroidism can be caused by auto-immune disease, radiation treatment, surgical removal of the thyroid, too much or too little iodine, and other factors.
