Sinusitis

Sinusitis is commonly known as a sinus infection.  It is characterized by inflammation of the sinus cavities and a feeling of blockage in that area.  Sinusitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, allergies, or the common cold.  Symptoms include a thick, colored discharge from the nose going down the back of the throat, difficulty breathing through the nose due to congestion, pain, swelling and tenderness in the cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes. Sometimes headache, fever, and malaise are also noted.  Acute sinusitis resolves in less than 30 days.  Chronic sinusitis is diagnosed when the sinuses stay inflamed and swollen for at least 12 weeks despite treatment.
